Grass is completely unreliable with respect to its content of micro-minerals, and its macro-mineral content is often insufficient. Therefore, animals are of course supplemented with minerals during grazing.

There are several methods, but in essence, free-choice supplementation via mineral feeders is the method that best ensures that the animals get the minerals they need. It is therefore just great that it is also by far the cheapest method! The salt in the free-choice supplements stimulates the intake and prevents at the same time luxury intake. Salt has the fantastic property that it tastes good when the body lacks it, but otherwise bad.

MicroFeeder has a wide range of mineral feeders. MineralRocker and BasisFeeder are targeted at grazing cattle, sheep and horses, while the Pitstop types mainly are for use indoors, e.g. for dairy cows that come to the barn to be milked.

In most cases, the animals will survive a grazing season without supplemental minerals, but they will not thrive as they should and their weight gain will be too small. The immune status decreases when the animals lack micro-minerals and they are therefore more easily attacked by, for example, flies and internal parasites.

Animals need 7 macro minerals (Ca, P, Mg, Na, Cl, K and S), 8 micro minerals (I, Fe, Cu, Co, Mo, Zn, Mn and Se), as well as a number of vitamins, divided into water-soluble vitamins (especially B and C vitamins) and fat-soluble vitamins (vitamin A, D, E).

We have made a guide for the composition of mineral supplements for use in mineral feeders - https://www.microfeeder .com/recommended, recommendations regarding mineral needs - https://www.microfeeder.com/mineralnorms, and MineralCalculator - https://www.microfeeder.com/mineralnorms#mineralcalculator, which is an App for estimating necessary intake of minerals for different types of cattle and sheep, and the price thereof.
